Joy D. Bennett is a Licensed Independent Social Worker and Certified Family Court Mediator.about-joy-bennett1  Joy specializes in therapy with children and family therapy for divorcing and blended families.  She also enjoys doing Individual Therapy and couples therapy with adults.  Joy has twenty-five years of experience providing support and assistance to people and seventeen years providing clinical therapy.

Joy believes that therapy involves “the search for the better direction,” that we all have the freedom to choose a different path.  She is respectful of individual choices and encourages clients to work at the pace that is right for each person.  In her work with adults with relationship problems, anxiety and depression, Joy helps individuals find their own unique solution using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT).  CBT is an evidence-based treatment that is action-oriented and is shown to be highly effective.  In addition, Joy uses Solution-focused strategies that teach clients to hold themselves accountable.  Joy works together with clients to help them find meaning in their lives.  This allows them to find their unique place in the world.  Joy’s goal is to have her clients develop a sense of power that enables them to make choices and choose their own path within their unique circumstances.

In her work with survivors of childhood abuse, Joy helps clients make sense of the suffering they’ve endured.  She believes that symptoms and memories don’t go away until our experiences have taught us what we need to know.  Wounds can be a source of wisdom and strength if we face our pain honestly and steadfastly.  “I believe that what we hate in ourselves, we’ll hate in others.  Self-acceptance starts and ends with having compassion for all those unwanted parts of ourselves,” says Joy.

In her work with children, Joy uses a combination of play therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Solution-focused strategies.  She helps families work together to come up with behavioral plans that can work.  Play therapy allows children to access their unconscious feelings through play.  “Play is the language, toys are the words.”  Says Joy, “My clients are the primary experts on their goals, values, and needs.  I’m the expert on child behavior; you’re the expert on your child.”
